Sam is physically identical to Max but her DNA is radically different; while all of Max's base-pair sequences are coded for a specific purpose, Sam's genes are imbued with the normal amount of junk DNA.

In early 2009, 12 X5s escaped from the Gillette, Wyoming Manticore facility, one of whom was Max. As a result Manticore "simplified" the remaining X5s and took Sam and the eleven other twins of the escapees to Manticore's psy-ops for evaluation, where they underwent testing and brainwashing for six months. Sam never forgave Max for abandoning Manticore and forcing those left behind to pay the price.

In 2019 Sam was assigned by Manticore on a deep-cover industrial espionage mission in San Francisco for two years, where she fell in love with her cover husband. After she found out Manticore had been destroyed, she wanted to adopt his son.

In 2021 Sam was captured in San Francisco by NSA Agent Ames White, who had mistook her for Max. He took her family hostage and Sam agreed to bring Max in for him in exchange for their safety. When Max discovered what had happened she helped to recover her family, and then asked Alec (X5-494) to aid her in getting safe passage to Canada, where she headed soon afterward.

Backdrop as to the storyline currently with Sam as I have been playing it.:
Sam did flee the country with her husband and son. When they got settled it was there that she told him what she was, who made her and her association to everything. They tried to deal with it, only unable to he left her and filed for a divorce. She tried making a living there, but it was far too much to handle, so she went back to the only place she knew. She came back to family.
She still resents Max for leaving them, for getting her life screwed up, but she's dealing with whatever comes her way. It's going to be trying to live again that's the hardest part.
